I think the yes votes cut across all parties. The NO votes were people who didn't understand the long words.
There is also the possibility that the scandal around the powerful people involved in the raping of children might have been a reason to provide more distraction in the form of mass shootings. I guess it depends on what conspiracy theory you like.
