The president recently praised the Australian model of gun control which outright banned self-loading rifles and shotguns. I seem to recall they also banned several types of hand guns as well. The net result, since 1996 when they did this has been an 18% reduction in the national murder rate.
In the U.S. since 1996, we have seen the expiry of the Clinton assault weapon ban, and a surge in the number of states becoming "shall issue" for CCW. The result here has been a 50% reduction in the national murder rate.
