Happy May Day

Celebrating many things, beginning with carefree outdoor recreation:
TODAY: *Winter Weather Advisory* Cloudy and colder with snow showers. An additional 3-7" of snow possible across the metro area during the day. A lot of melting and compaction could limit the amount of snow on the ground at any one time.
TONIGHT: Snow will gradually come to an end and a hard freeze is in store.  Record setting lows will be possible as temperatures drop to 20 to 25 degrees. The record low for May 2nd is 22 degrees, last set in 1954.
So I probably won't have to shovel it. My plum trees on the other hand, have just started to blossom.

Gay marriage became official today with several hundred being registered at 12:01 this morning. Big whoop.

Oh yes, there's also supposed to be a big celebration of the progress we've made toward a global socialist utopia of the sort already achieved in places like Cuba and North Korea as the rest of us roll merrily down the four-lane superhighway of communal liberalism, paved with human skulls.

According to the Denver Post story "Colorado Couples Celebrate Midnight Civil-Unions Ceremony":

Shortly after midnight, whoops and cheers rang
off the glassy interior of Denver's Wellington
E. Webb Building and then again and again when
each new set of 10 numbers flashed on a television
monitor near the Clerk and Record's office,
summoning the next in line to come apply for a
license. With paperwork in hand, the couples
returned to the atrium to exchange vows.
...
Boulder County also was expected to hand out
licenses at midnight. Other counties will
start Wednesday morning.

So government offices stayed open at midnight to accomadate one group of people (gays represent, what?, 4% of the population), but could not expedite background checks for lawful gun owners (who represent 15% to 30% of the population). For several months earlier this year, the state of Colorado illegally delayed background checks for gun buyers, causing one to two week waits.

I'm all for gays getting married, although it's not an issue I feel strongly about one way or the other.

But this double-standard is going to breed a lot of f***ing resentment, even among liberal/libertarian minded gun owners such as myself.

The same week that Colorado was s**tting all over my rights, I received the following e-mail:

From: Michael Bennet
Date: Tue, Mar 12, 2013 at 1:36 PM
Subject: Historic

Colorado just made history. Both the state Senate
and House have passed civil unions and now the bill
is on its way to Governor Hickenlooper's desk for
his signature!

This is a great day for equality and anyone who
believes that, gay or straight, all couples want to
be together for the same reasons. They want to make
lifetime commitments to love and care for each other.
The civil unions bill will give all Colorado families
the legal and economic protections needed to care for
one another and it will help build stronger communities.

Six months ago, my reaction would have been "Cool, it's about time".

The "logic" of gun control justifies the most vile forms of racist and bigotry imaginable.

- If most criminals are people with guns, then people with guns (15% - 30% of the population) must be treated like criminals.

- If most criminals are black, then blacks (12% of the population) must be treated like criminals.

- If most pedophiles are homosexuals, then homosexuals (4% of the population) must be treated like pedophiles.

- If most terrorists are Muslim, then Muslims (1% of the population) must be treated like terrorists.

- If all illegal immigrants are willing to break the law, than all illegal immigrants (11 million) must be treated like lawbreakers.

Since the Donkeyrats decided to alienate, disenfranchise, and marginalize me -- somebody who is much more at home in a liberal culture like Boulder than any gathering of Tea Party idiots or other conservative morons -- I am more than willing to vote for the most vile right-wing candidate if that's what I have to do to secure my rights. F*** everybody else. Since gays didn't speak up for me when their Fascist allies decided to outlaw what I do in the privacy of my own home with my friends (e.g., trading guns), I'm not going to stick my neck out for them if/when the tables are turned in the future.

Of course, that will probably never happen. When the "gay gene" is discovered, you can bet that even the most Progressive of parents-to-be will choose to abort their gay fetuses. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Heh. A few hours after I wrote that, today's "Best of the Web Today" asked:

Suppose researchers isolated both a gene that predisposed the Collins brothers to homosexuality and a prenatal hormonal condition that caused that predisposition to manifest itself in Jason's case but not his brother. Suppose further that parents or unborn children could be tested for that gene, and mothers carrying sons who have it could be administered a hormone treatment that would reduce or eliminate the possibility of a homosexual child.

Would gay-rights groups push for outlawing such a therapy? If so, would their pro-abortion allies join the push, or would they feel compelled to stand for "reproductive rights"? If such a therapy were available, would parents forgo it given the increasing public acceptance of homosexuality? Would its popularity follow political patterns, so that conservative Southerners would opt for straight kids while liberal Northeasterners allowed nature to take its course? Or would lots of the latter group take advantage of their right to privacy and make sure their kids didn't turn out gay, not that there's anything wrong with that?
