QOTD - Legislative Dunce List

From the Washingtom Times:

Ms. Hullinghorst said last week that firearms ownership is redundant because the state Legislature keeps citizens safe from harm.“As a woman, I have the right not to carry a gun and to feel safe on the streets, and that’s what we provide for in the state Legislature is for all of us in the state of Colorado — to feel safe on the streets without having to carry a gun the thought that the only way we can protect ourselves is to wield our own weapon is completely absurd and an argument that I absolutely discount as frivolous,”

Colorado House Majority Leader Dickey Lee Hullinghorst
The constitution notes that we all have a right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Implied there is the right to defend these rights.

"The constitution notes that we all have a right to 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness'."

Actually, that phrase is in the Declaration of Independence, not the U.S. Constitution. But you've got good company.

In an e-mail from the Boulder County Democrat Party ( March 07, 2013 ), Rebecca Browning stated that :

"It is time we, the silent majority, reminded the NRA that there is more to the Constitution than just their right to bear arms - what about the bit that says 'liberty and justice for all'?"

The bit that says "Liberty and justice for all" is from the Pledge of Allegiance, not the Constitution.

And of course, there is Bill Clinton's famous 1996 gaffe, when he conflated the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence with Lincoln's Gettysburg Address :

"The last time I checked, the Constitution said ‘of the people, by the people and for the people.’ That’s what the Declaration of Independence says."

Then, I suppose we should ignore the act of Congress some years back, called the "militia Act", which might or might not still be in effect.

The Militia Act specifies every citizen (as defined then, male over 25) have rifle and ammo, and be ready and able to respond to a call to arms to defend community, state, and nation against unrest, aggression, etc.

The dear lady might also consider the US Supreme Court, finding that *no* individual is entitled to expect protection of any sort from any police or peace officer or organization, that police serve the community in a statistical fashion -- not protect people.

And, please, don't regale the dear lady with sordid tales of mass shootings where folk are disarmed in Disarmed Victim Zones (i.e., "No Guns Allowed", like a certain movie theater in Aurora, CO) vs. FBI reports mentioning the decline in violent crimes where gun ownership increases.

*sigh*
